These pencil cases and notebooks are made from single-use plastic bags sourced from the world's largest waste village in Egypt. Known as Cairo Garbage City and home to over 60,000 Zaballeen - garbage collectors. They are entrepreneurial garbage workers who have built the most efficient waste disposal system in the world, recycling more than 80% of the waste collected daily which represents 3000-4000 tons per day, while developed cities and multinational waste disposal companies they only recycle 20-30% of what they collect, leaving the rest to rot in giant landfills. How does it work? After the collection of the raw material (plastic bags), it undergoes a 3-step sanitization process using specific detergents and a special washing machine. The materials are then hung to dry in the Egyptian sun which kills bacteria as an additional precautionary and environmentally friendly measure. Then the raw materials are transformed into compressed fabric sheets. Over 250,000 plastic bags have been recycled since this green process was started!
